A note from Gator of Nightmoves Magazine: I first enjoyed Freddie Everett's music by accident, while I was out chasing women at the various bars around Houston. Somehow I wound up at the Sunset on Witte one night, and there was the Freddie Everett Band, which blew me away. I've been a fan ever since. And I'm not easy to impress - it's my job to be critical of bands. On a break that night, I got to meet Freddie and his band, and was further impressed. Great people making great music. At that time, Freddie was already sick, he just didn't know it yet.

The Freddie Everett Band goes on - with Freddie's son - and they are still one of the top stage bands in Texas, hands down. If you get a chance to see them, I am sure you too will be impressed.

ABOUT FREDDIE EVERETT

Freddie Everett is a guitar player raised in Houston, who has become something of a legend in the local music scene and around Texas. He‘s no longer able to play, because of a cruel painful and debilitating disease called ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease). His fans still worship him. He was a virtuoso, whose guitar solos were never the same twice. His kind spirit and affable nature made him loved by all. He always showed up for any benefit, no matter how small. Now he could use the favor returned. Freddie was on top of his game, when he became ill. He was one of the highest paid musicians, for the level he had achieved, and had a big house in Cinco Ranch. He was so good that SONY records had just offered him a contract, but the day he was supposed to go record with them, was the day his hands just would no longer do what he wanted them to, so he never got the chance. Since then, he and his family have lost everything. They now struggle to make ends meet in a small apartment. Freddie is now confined to a wheelchair and is totally dependent for all his needs and care. Freddie has been suffering from ALS - Lou Gehrig’s disease, a progressive disease, which is fatal. The books all say 3-5 yr’s and you’re done. Freddie has lasted 6yr’s.

Freddie and ALS - Lou Gehrig’s Disease

Freddie has been suffering from ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, for many years. ALS is a progessive disease, which is fatal. It's akin to Muscular Sclerosis and Muscular Dystrophy. Unlike MS, which can have exacerbations and remissions, ALS is the gift that keeps on giving. The progresssion simply continues. Most of the literature says that an ALS patient will only suvive for 3 to 5 years. Freddie has already survived well beyond that. The progression has been slowed by good care and nutrtion, and faith. Late year, a doctor who specializes in ALS told Freddie and his wife Annette that he had only six weeks to live. Had they followed the doctor's advice, Freddie would have a Trachiostomy and a large tube in his throat to aide breathing, a PEG tube in his stomach for feeding a liquid diet, and would have been put on hospice and given all the Morphine he wanted, with a DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) order, preventing EMS from reviving him. We would have lost him over the holidays. He caught a cold and was running a fever. He started having trouble breathing. His eyes rolled back and he was foaming at the mouth, before EMS got to him. He recovered and is looking strong and stable, but not quite as strong as last year. He's completely confined to a wheelchair, can only hold his head up if you lift it for him first, speaks with an ALS accent, and rely's on a Bi-PAP (Bilateral Positive Air Pressure) to breath, most of the time. When he's feeling strong, he can spend up to a few hours breathing on his own. He still eats some solid foods (in extremely small bites, which he weakly chews endlessly), along with supplements (including Creatine, which seems to have helped). His legs are strong enough to push himslef back in the wheelcair or to bear weight for a transfer, but he hasn't walked in over a year. His arms have been completely flaccid (floppy), for much longer than that. There are examples of people who have survived many years beyond the expected 3-5 years (check out the videos on YouTube). Freddie already has, but there's no guarantee of anything. Freddie still believes a cure or a miracle is just around the corner. Send him your love and prayers.
